Who we are
Before It Happens operates https://beforeithappens.co.uk. We are the data controller for the information you give us through this site. For any privacy question, email privacy@beforeithappens.co.uk.
What we collect
You can read every guide on this site without giving us anything. We only collect personal data if you choose to complete the quote form. Then we collect:
- Your first name, telephone number, postcode and, if you give it, your email address.
- Your age range, whether you have smoked or vaped in the last 12 months, and what you told us you most want to protect.
- The page you were reading when you asked, and any campaign tag in the link you arrived through.
- Your IP address and browser user agent, and the time you submitted, recorded as evidence of consent and to prevent abuse of the form.
We do not ask for medical history, bank details or your date of birth on this site. If a broker needs those to quote, it will collect them itself, under its own privacy notice.
Why we collect it, and our lawful basis
We use it for one thing: to pass your enquiry to a protection insurance broker so it can prepare quotes and call you. Our lawful basis is your consent, given by ticking the consent box on the form. We store the exact wording you agreed to alongside your enquiry.
The answer about smoking is health-related, so we treat it with particular care. We collect it only because it changes the price of cover materially, we ask for it as a plain yes or no, and we pass it on only to the broker preparing your quotes.
Who we share it with
We share your enquiry with one selected FCA-authorised protection insurance broker so that it can quote for you. We may be paid for that introduction. Once your enquiry reaches the broker, the broker is a separate data controller and handles your data under its own privacy notice, which it will provide.
We do not sell your details, and we do not pass them to multiple brokers, marketing lists or lead exchanges.
Our technical suppliers process data on our behalf: Google Cloud hosts the site, Cloudflare serves and protects it, and email delivery carries the enquiry to us. They act on our instructions and may not use your data for their own purposes.
How long we keep it
We keep quote enquiries for 24 months, so that we can evidence your consent and resolve any dispute about an introduction, and then delete them. Server and security logs are kept for a much shorter period.
Cookies and analytics
The site sets no advertising or tracking cookies of its own. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary cookie to keep the site secure and available. If website analytics are enabled, they measure page views in aggregate and are not used to build an advertising profile of you.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, and receive it in a portable form. Because we rely on consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time — although that will not undo an introduction already made. Email privacy@beforeithappens.co.uk and we will respond within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Children
This site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has submitted the form, contact us and we will delete the record.
Changes
If we change this notice we will update the date at the top. Material changes to who receives your data will be reflected on the form itself before you submit it.
